Georgia State Play - Folk Life Play

"Swamp Gravy"

Adopted in 1994

The true flavor of the South comes in a slice of life served every October and March by "Swamp Gravy," Georgia's sensational folk life play. The 1994 and 1995 Regional Designation Award winner of the Cultural Olympiad, Swamp Gravy gleans the comedy and tragedy of daily life from family stories, tall tales and folk lore from southwest Georgia. It celebrates the culture that is uniquely rural Georgia.

Like its namesake, swamp gravy, the play is a delectable concoction stirred up from whatever is on hand. The region's history, folklore and talent create a tantalizing performance treat. Based on true stories, Swamp Gravy transforms Southern life into unforgettable theatre.

The stories told in Swamp Gravy help animate our region's heritage by preserving the knowledge of the past in a stunning production that combines drama, song, dance and spectacle.

The true stories of Colquitt and the area are adapted to the stage by a professional playwright and the cast of around 100 volunteers are directed by a professional director. Original music, choreography, set design and light design help to create a grand scale stage production in Cotton Hall Theater.

The Museum of Southern Cultures is located in Historic Cotton Hall, at 166 E. Main Street in Colquitt, GA. The museum will take you on a stroll through time, where meeting at the beauty/ barber shop, the bank, the train depot, the dry goods store, the picture show, or the "blue" doctor's office became a social event and a time most coveted. Other areas and many antique exhibits bring to life many colorful and sometimes tragic stories and events in the lives of Rural Southerners. Storytelling Circles are available by appointment.

The Museum of Southern Cultures programs have been created to coincide with the Georgia Educational Quality Core Curriculum. For more information or appointments call 229.758.6686. Museum hours are Wednesday - Friday 9:00 - 5:00, and Saturday -Sunday 1:00 - 5:00
