Washington is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States located north of Oregon, west of Idaho, and south of the Canadian province of British Columbia on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Washington is the 18th most extensive and the 13th most populous of the 50 United States.

On November 11, 1889, Washington became the 42nd state to enter the Union. It is the only state named for a president. Washington was nicknamed "The Evergreen State" by CT Conover, pioneer Seattle realtor and historian, for its abundant evergreen forests. This nickname was adopted by the state in legislature in 1893, was given because of the large fir and pine trees in the state.
