Official State Flowers ListingUS Official State FlowersBloom or Blossom of a PlantIn the popular sense, the bloom or blossom of a plant; the showy portion, usually of a different color, shape, and texture from the foliage. A flower, sometimes known as a bloom or blossom, is the reproductive structure of some seed-bearing plants, characteristically having either specialized male or female organs or both male and female organs, such as stamens and a pistil, enclosed in an outer envelope of petals and sepals. A complete flower consists of two essential parts, the stamens and the pistil, and two floral envelopes, the corolla and callyx. In mosses the flowers consist of a few special leaves surrounding or subtending organs called archegonia. Each of the 50 states have designated an official tree and flower. Many of the state flowers are from other parts of the world and were chosen because of their beauty or importance, not because they represent the natural flora of the state they represent. Some of the Latin names you see here may be different from those you may have seen before due to changes in plant nomenclature; we have chosen to list the current valid botanical name. Where more than one accepted common name exists, the common name in the legislation has been listed.
