Charlotte County was named for Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, consort of George III. It was formed from Lunenburg
County in 1764. Its area is 471 square miles, and the county seat is Charlotte Court House. The population is 12,472
according to the 2000 census.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 477 square miles (1,237 kmē), of which, 475
square miles (1,230 kmē) of it is land and 2 square miles (6 kmē) of it (0.51%) is water.

The history of our nation can be seen as a prolonged struggle to define the relative roles and powers of our governments: federal, state, and local. And the names we've given our counties, our most locally based jurisdictions, reflects the "characteristic
features of our country!"
