History
The county was formally organized in January 1871 and named for Major Hanson who had settled in the area in 1870. The
county seat was temporarily located at Rockport. The town of Alexandria became the county seat in 1880.

square miles (1,126 kmē) of it is land and 1 square miles (2 kmē) of it (0.20%) is water
