New Mexico Counties

There is thirty-three counties in the state of New Mexico. There were originally nine counties formed in 1852. Santa Ana County, New Mexico Territory, one of the nine original counties, was annexed in 1876 to Bernalillo County, New Mexico.

Taos County was created 9 January 1852. Taos is the county seat of Taos County. Taos is an ancient Indian Village built several hundred years ago. This beautiful county is the center for artists and professional people. Tourism is a major commercial activity. Kit Carson loved the area. He lived there several years.

Today's counties are the most flexible, locally responsive and creative governments in the US. They are the most diverse, varying in size, population, geography, and governmental structure.
