There is thirty-three counties in the state of New Mexico. There were originally nine counties
formed in 1852. Santa Ana County, New Mexico Territory, one of the nine original counties, was annexed in 1876
to Bernalillo County, New Mexico. |

March 1903. The county seat is Bernalillo. The county was named for the Sandoval
family who were early settlers. This county has many attractions like the
Bandelier National Monument, Coronado State Monument, many ancient Indian ruins,
and excellent hunting and fishing. Tourism is a major source of commerce.

Today's counties are the most flexible, locally responsive and creative governments in the US. They are the most diverse, varying in size, population, geography, and governmental structure. In their politics and policies, they express a 1990's political slogan "Think globally,
