Nevada Counties
There are sixteen counties and one independent city in the state of Nevada. On November 25,
1861, the first Nevada Territorial Legislature established nine counties. Nevada was admitted to the Union on
October 31, 1864 with eleven counties. In 1969, Ormsby County and Carson City were consolidated into a single
municipal government known as Carson City. |

Named in honor of Gen. John J. Pershing, Commander in Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I.

March 18, 1919 - Named in honor of Gen. John J. Pershing, Commander in Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I. Seat: Lovelock, after the George Lovelock, a native of England, and his family which settled there in 1862.

6,037 square miles (15,635 kmē) of it is land and 31 square miles (80 kmē) of it (0.51%) is water.

Today's counties are the most flexible, locally responsive and creative governments in the US. They are the most diverse, varying in size, population, geography, and governmental structure. In their politics and policies, they express a 1990's political slogan "Think globally,
