History of Pemiscot County
Established by act of legislature on February 19, 1851, and erected from territory cut off from New Madrid County.
The boundaries are: On the north Portage Bayou to Little River, thence due west to Dunklin County line which forms the
western boundary, on the south the parallel of 36 30' (Arkansas State Line), and on the east the Mississippi River.
Pemiscot is one of the six counties of the state which bears an Indian name, the others being Moniteau, Nodaway, Oregon,
Mississippi, and Osage. The name was given for the principal stream of the county (cf. above). The older pronunciation
was "pemisco," and that is still heard occasionally especially when referring to the name of the bayou; the general
tendency, however, is to pronounce it "pemiscott." (Douglass I 313, Goodspeed 369, Ramsay)

The history of our nation can be seen as a prolonged struggle to define the relative roles and powers of our governments: federal, state, and local. And the names we've given our counties, our most locally based jurisdictions, reflects the "characteristic
features of our country!"
But age, size and colorful names of our counties isn't the only reason to explore counties' role in American history, or the history of county government itself. In fact, the story of county government reflects the larger meanings of American history.
Today's counties are the most flexible, locally responsive and creative governments in the US. They are the most diverse, varying in size, population, geography, and governmental structure. In their politics and policies, they express a 1990's political slogan "Think globally,
act locally." |
