History

Lincoln County was established during the military Reconstruction period of the State, April 7, 1870, and was named for President Abraham Lincoln. It is located in the southwestern part of the State and the counties of Lawrence, Copiah, Pike, Franklin and Amite were divided to form its area. The act located the seat of justice at Brookhaven.
Brookhaven is the county seat and largest town in the county.

Brookhaven probably was named for Brookhaven, New York, on Long Island, the home of Samuel Jayne, who emigrated to the present site of Old Brook in about 1818; but it may have been named for the Brooks family, builders of the first house in Brookhaven.

There was an unknown record loss in 1893, no records exist before then.

Counties: US Map

The history of our nation can be seen as a prolonged struggle to define the relative roles and powers of our governments: federal, state, and local. And the names we've given our counties, our most locally based jurisdictions, reflects the "characteristic features of our country!"

But age, size and colorful names of our counties isn't the only reason to explore counties' role in American history, or the history of county government itself. In fact, the story of county government reflects the larger meanings of American history.

Today's counties are the most flexible, locally responsive and creative governments in the US. They are the most diverse, varying in size, population, geography, and governmental structure. In their politics and policies, they express a 1990's political slogan "Think globally, act locally."
