for President Abraham Lincoln. It is located in the southwestern part of the State and the counties of Lawrence, Copiah,
Pike, Franklin and Amite were divided to form its area. The act located the seat of justice at Brookhaven.
Brookhaven probably was named for Brookhaven, New York, on Long Island, the home of Samuel Jayne, who emigrated
to the present site of Old Brook in about 1818; but it may have been named for the Brooks family, builders of the
first house in Brookhaven. GeographyAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 588 square miles (1,523 kmē), of which, 586
