Etymology - Origin of County Name

James Monroe (1758-1831), president of the United States who issued an important contribution to US foreign policy in the Monroe Doctrine, a warning to European nations against intervening in the Western Hemisphere.

County History

Monroe county was formed in 1820. It is located in the Pennyrile region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 495 to 1141 feet above sea level. In 2000 the county population was 11,756 in a land area of 330.81 square miles, an average of 35.5 people per square mile. The county seat is Tompkinsville.

Today's counties are the most flexible, locally responsive and creative governments in the US. They are the most diverse, varying in size, population, geography, and governmental structure. In their politics and policies, they express a 1990's political slogan "Think globally, act locally."
