History

Mason county was formed in 1789. It is located in the Outer Bluegrass region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 485 to 1000 feet above sea level. In 2000 the county population was 16,800 in a land area of 241.11 square miles, an average of 69.7 people per square mile. The county seat is Maysville.

Today's counties are the most flexible, locally responsive and creative governments in the US. They are the most diverse, varying in size, population, geography, and governmental structure.
