Etymology - Origin of County Name

Col. Richard Henderson (1735-1785), founder of the Transylvania Company which acquired portions of Kentucky from the Indians.

County History

Henderson county was formed in 1799. It is located in the Western Coal Field region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 331 to 588 feet above sea level. In 2000 the county population was 44,829 in a land area of 440.12 square miles, an average of 101.9 people per square mile. The county seat is Henderson.

But age, size and colorful names of our counties isn't the only reason to explore counties' role in American history, or the history of county government itself. In fact, the story of county government reflects the larger meanings of American history.

Today's counties are the most flexible, locally responsive and creative governments in the US. They are the most diverse, varying in size, population, geography, and governmental structure. In their politics and policies, they express a 1990's political slogan "Think globally, act locally."
