Etymology - Origin of County Name
Maj. Benjamin Franklin Graves (1771-1813), legislator, soldier
in the War of 1812. One of those honored after the Battle of River Raisin.

Graves county was formed in 1824. It is located in the Jackson Purchase region of the state. The elevation in the
county ranges from 321 to 580 feet above sea level. In 2000 the county population was 37,028 in a land area of 555.59
square miles, an average of 66.6 people per square mile. The county seat is Mayfield.
