History
Fulton County was created on January 28, 1823 (Laws, 1823, p. 88) and was formed from Pike County. Present area, or
parts of it, formerly included in: Madison County (1812–1821), Pike County (1821–1823) and St. Clair County (1795–1812).
The County was named for Robert Fulton, the first successful builder of steamboats on American waters. The County Seat
is Lewistown (1823-Present). Originally Fulton Courthouse; changed to Lewistown on March 14, 1831.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 883 square miles (2,286 kmē), of which, 866
square miles (2,242 kmē) of it is land and 17 square miles (44 kmē) of it (1.92%) is water. The largest city in the
county is Canton and the smallest is Marbletown which contains 1 house. (U.S.Census Bureau)
