County History

Fulton County was created on January 28, 1823 (Laws, 1823, p. 88) and was formed from Pike County. Present area, or parts of it, formerly included in: Madison County (1812–1821), Pike County (1821–1823) and St. Clair County (1795–1812).

The County was named for Robert Fulton, the first successful builder of steamboats on American waters. The County Seat is Lewistown (1823-Present). Originally Fulton Courthouse; changed to Lewistown on March 14, 1831.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 883 square miles (2,286 kmē), of which, 866 square miles (2,242 kmē) of it is land and 17 square miles (44 kmē) of it (1.92%) is water. The largest city in the county is Canton and the smallest is Marbletown which contains 1 house. (U.S.Census Bureau)

The history of our nation was a prolonged struggle to define the relative roles and powers of our governments: federal, state, and local. And the names given the counties, our most locally based jurisdictions, reflects the "characteristic features of this country!"

But age, size and colorful names of our counties isn't the only reason to explore counties' role in American history, or the history of county government itself. In fact, the story of county government reflects the larger meanings of American history.

Today's counties are the most flexible, locally responsive and creative governments in the US. They are the most diverse, varying in size, population, geography, and governmental structure. In their politics and policies, they express a 1990's political slogan "Think globally, act locally."
