Colorado Counties
Colorado CountiesColorado currently has sixty-four counties. The Counties of Colorado are important components of government since the state has no secondary civil subdivisions such as townships. Two counties, the City and County of Denver and the City and County of Broomfield, have consolidated city and county governments.. No organized Counties of the District of Louisiana, the Territory of Missouri, or the Territory of Nebraska existed within the present boundaries of the State of Colorado. |
Grand County, ColoradoGrand County History, Geography, Demographics, Cities and Towns, and Education
Etymology - Origin of County NameGrand County is named for the Grand River, later renamed the Colorado River. Demographics:County QuickFacts: Census Bureau Quick Facts County HistoryWhen Grand County was created February 2, 1874 it was carved out of Summit County and contained land to the western
and northern borders of the state, which is now in present day Moffat County and Routt County. It was named after Grand
Lake and the Grand River, an old name for the Colorado River, which has its headwaters in the county. On January 29,
1877 Routt County was created and Grand County shrunk down to its current western boundary. When valuable minerals were
found in North Park, Grand County claimed the area as part of its county, a claim Larimer County also held. It took a
decision by the Colorado Supreme Court in 1886 to declare North Park part of Larimer County, setting Grand County's
northern boundary. GeographyAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,870 square miles (4,842 kmē), of which, 1,847 square miles (4,783 kmē) of it is land and 23 square miles (59 kmē) of it (1.23%) is water. Neighboring Counties:

The history of our nation was a prolonged struggle to define
the relative roles and powers of our governments: federal, state, and local.
And the names given the counties, our most locally based jurisdictions,
reflects the "characteristic features of this country!"
But age, size and colorful names of our counties isn't the only reason to explore counties' role in American history, or the history of county government itself. In fact, the story of county government reflects the larger meanings of American history. Today's counties are the most flexible, locally responsive and creative governments in the US. They are the most diverse, varying in size, population, geography, and governmental structure. In their politics and policies, they express a 1990's political slogan "Think globally, act locally." |
