Denali Borough, Alaska

 

Denali Borough lies in the Interior Alaska, between the Fairbanks North Star and Mat-Su Boroughs. Much of the Borough is the Denali National Park, home to Mount McKinley, the highest mountain in North America, at 20,320 feet. It lays at approximately 63° 51' N Latitude, 148° 58' W Longitude. The society is located in the Nenana Recording District. The area encompasses 12,780 square miles of land and 0 square miles of water.


The earliest residents were nomadic Indians who fished, trapped and hunted through the Interior. The first non-Native settlers were miners, who established a camp at Hoseanna Creek near Healy (later known as Lignite Creek) prior to 1902. Then Construction of the Alaska Railroad brought additional settlers to the area as early as the 1920s. Clear Air Force Base, the Usibelli Coal Mine and tourism at the Denali Park have brought growth and development. The Borough was incorporated by December 1990.

The borough has a total area of 12,775 miČ and 12,750 miČ of it is land and 25 miČ of it is water. The total area is 0.19% made with water.

The highest point of North America is in this borough: Mount McKinley 6,194 m.

The US Census in the year 2000 reported there were 1,893 people, 785 households, and 452 families residing in the borough. The racial makeup of the borough was 85.74% Caucasian, 1.43% African American, 4.75% Native American, 1.53% Asian, 0.37% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 5.23% from two or more races. 2.48% of the populations were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 785 households out of which 31.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.40% were married couples living together, 4.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.30% were non-families. 35.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 1.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the borough the population was spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 36.80% from 25 to 44, 29.70% from 45 to 64, and 3.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 139.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 147.10 males.
