History

Chambers County, Alabama


Formed by an act of the Alabama General Assembly on 1832 Dec. 18, from Creek Nation territory. It is located in the east-central portion of the state, and is bounded on the east by the Chattahoochee River. The county is named for Henry Chambers, a US Senator from Alabama (1825-26). The location of the county seat was selected in 1833 and the town of Lafayette was built specifically for that purpose.

According to the census of 2000, there were 36,583 people, 14,522 households, and 10,194 families living in the county. The population density was 24/km˛ (61/mi˛). There were 16,256 housing units at an average density of 11/km˛ (27/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county was 60.88% White, 38.11% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 14,522 households out of which 29.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.50% were married couples living together, 17.40% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.80% were non-families. 27.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the county the population was spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 16.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 89.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $29,667, and the median income for a family was $36,598. Males had a median income of $28,771 versus $21,159 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,147. About 14.30% of families and 17.00% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.50% of those under age 18 and 18.20% of that age 65 or over.
