Home Improvement Guide

Fiberglass Windows: A Perfect Balance of Form and Function.

Windows Types: Fiberglass

Are you in the market for some new windows? If so, it's time to start doing some research. Believe it or not, modern windows are pretty high tech, and knowing what you want can save you a lot of money in the long run.

It is estimated that 40% of a home's heat loss goes through its windows and doors. If you can buy a well-insulated window, you could save a substantial amount of money. Window insulation is affected by a number of different variables. The most important variable is the material used to make the window.

The three most common window materials are wood, vinyl, and fiberglass. Fiberglass is probably the newest material to emerge on the market, and thus it currently has the lowest adoption rate. Fiberglass window types are becoming increasing popular, however, due to the advantages they have over vinyl and wood. Fiberglass is extremely durable, and will last longer than wood or vinyl. It provides as much or more insulation than vinyl, but because they are stronger than vinyl, fiberglass window types are less bulky.

In general people love the looks of windows made from wood. Unfortunately, wooden windows are tough to maintain, and thus generally don't last as long as vinyl or fiberglass windows. The one good thing about fiberglass is that it is a material that can be stained to look a lot more like wood than vinyl.

The one drawback to fiberglass window types is the price. Fiberglass is usually a bit more expensive than vinyl. If you are buying your windows for the long term, however, you may find that at little more money paid upfront will provide a lot more savings over the long term, especially if your windows never wear out.
