Home Improvement Guide

It your home make it the best it can be

Styles: Double-Hung Windows

Are you constantly feeling a bit chilled this winter? Does the temperature on your thermostat seem higher than the temperature you feel around the house? If so, you probably aren't going crazy. You may have some insulation problems.

Poor insulation can make your home feel drafty and render your heating system less effective. The two biggest sources of poor insulation are generally windows and doors. These moveable parts along your home's exterior can shift along with your house over the course of several years. If too much shifting occurs, insulation systems can break down.

Older windows can be bad insulators even if they fit well into a window sill. Many older windows and cheaper contemporary models are made with only one pane of glass. Glass is a pretty bad insulator, meaning that one pane between the cold and you doesn't offer a lot of protection. These days, windows have come a long way. Many are built with two or three panes, creating insulating air pockets between the panes. In some windows, these air pockets are filled with insulating gases, such as argon. For even more protection, glass panes can be coated with a finish that deflects the sun's rays and ultra violet light.

If you want get warmer this winter without paying a higher energy bill, you may want to invest in a new set of windows. Double hung windows are some of the most popular window types installed today. Although there are a number of double hung window styles, they all share a common design. Double hung windows have two moveable sashes--one on the top and one on the bottom..
