Massachusetts Public Colleges and Universities

Four-Year Public Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts

Although New England is actually a collection of states, Massachusetts seems to encapsulate the true spirit of this historic region. Whether you enjoy history, sports, science, or nature, Massachusetts has something for you. This is especially true in the autumn months when the trees begin to change colors. There is nothing like an autumn drive in Massachusetts when the foliage is at its peak. And if you are colonial history fanatic, only Pennsylvania and Virginia would be able to suit your needs more. Boston, as much as Philadelphia, Jamestown, or Williamsburg is often regarded as the birthplace of the United States.

The State of Massachusetts administers its own system of higher education, known as public colleges or universities, just like local governments and cities operate their own public K-12 school systems for local residents.

Financial support for Massachusetts public colleges and universities comes directly from the state government, from tax dollars and other revenue the state collects in lieu of private endowments. Massachusetts public colleges and universities may also receive funds from the federal government and private sources, but in many cases the state is the primary source of support of public colleges.

With a longstanding tradition of education, you will also find that the online colleges and distance learning programs that Massachusetts has to offer is well worth it. 10.6 percent of the state's population was enrolled in college in 2000. The continuing education opportunities this state has to offer are terrific.

Massachusetts Colleges
Universities and colleges in Massachusetts aren't just about fast-paced city life though. Western Massachusetts is home to the beautiful Berkshire Mountains and then there's Cape Cod with the National Marine Fisheries Aquarium, whale watching, historic lighthouses and plenty of biking and hiking opportunities.
