Maryland Private Colleges & Universities

Independent Colleges, Schools, and Universities

In a state that boasts one of the best public university systems in the country, it is not surprising that Maryland colleges draw students from all over the world. Schools and universities in the "Free State" lead the way in so many academic and athletic areas. Perhaps Maryland's close proximity to Washington, DC helps it curry favor in the form of increased federal spending. Or perhaps Maryland colleges excel because they are conveniently situated between four major metropolises (Philadelphia, Manhattan, Baltimore, and the nation's capital).

Maryland private colleges and universities offer a wide range of education programs with degrees and certificates up to the doctoral level, as well as professional degrees such as law and medicine. These Maryland private schools are diverse in character, academic emphasis, and origins. Some private colleges or schools have a religious affiliation; others are secular. Private colleges and universities  may be profit or non-profit institutions. Typically, Maryland independent colleges or private schools give weight to personal characteristics and activities in addition to considering GPA and test scores. While many Maryland private schools are considerably more expensive than comparable state institutions, they also tend to offer more generous financial aid packages. Many students have found the actual out-of-pocket cost to earn a degree from a private college in Maryland to be less than the cost of the state schools to which they were accepted. On the one hand, public colleges are usually less expensive, particularly for in-state residents. They get most of their money from the state or local government. Check out your state's Guide to Residency. Maryland private colleges rely on tuition, fees, endowments, and other private sources of funding. On the other hand, Maryland private colleges are usually smaller and can offer more personalized attention (and some believe, more prestige).

Maryland Independent College and University Association

Founded in 1971, the MICUA is a voluntary association of eighteen independent colleges and universities, which has as its mission the collective representation and coordination of independent higher education in Maryland. The Association is composed of a diverse group of institutions with different interests and needs - from St. John's College, a small institution with a unique "Great Books" curriculum, to Johns Hopkins University, a large comprehensive research institution with an international reputation for excellence in education, research, and health care.
