Small towns don't always have museums, farmers markets, and outdoor concerts, but Wausau, Wis., sure does. An area of 39,106 residents, Wausau exceeds small town expectations by providing residents with several colleges and business opportunities.

Wausau colleges

Wausau residents looking for educational opportunities could look to Northcentral Technical College, which has its central campus in Wausau. NTC offers more than 150 programs -- associate degrees, technical diplomas, and certificates -- in a variety of subjects, ranging from accounting, yes, and even to wood technology. Tuition costs $111.85 per credit for in-state students and $167.80 per credit for out-of-state students.

The University of Wisconsin-Marathon County is based in Wausau. This two-year school has 1,366 students, and offers three certificate programs, an Associate of Arts and Sciences, and several pre-requisite courses to ensure a smooth transfer. Tuition is a little over $5,000 a year for in-state students and $11,000 for out-of-state students. Rasmussen College also has a campus in Wausau. There, students can choose from associate and bachelor's degrees, certificates, and diplomas in many subjects, such as business and nursing. The school also offers a mix of online courses, and is one of the many possible reasons why 22 percent of Wausau residents hold bachelor's degrees.

Wausau economy

The main industry in Wausau is manufacturing (comprising 23.2 percent of the workforce), followed by close-seconds, education and health care. The top three employers in town include Aspirus Wausau Hospital, Inc., Wausau School District, and Eastbay. With its thriving colleges and relatively low unemployment rate (at 7.6 percent), things are positive for this fun little town.
