Today, students at the fine local colleges in Eau Claire, Wis., can take a study break and head for the historic Carson Park, where a statue of the 18-year-old Aaron was dedicated in 1994. Aaron left Eau Claire to play in Milwaukee, but students will find there are plenty of reasons to stay in the city after graduation. Eau Claire collegesEau Claire is home to a branch of the Wisconsin state university system, as well as a Lutheran college and a technical school. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire enrolls about 10,700 students. In-state tuition in 2011-12 ran to $8,025. Out-of-state tuition was $15,598. UW-Eau Claire's self-stated mission is to ready students for an increasingly global world, and it leads the state's master's-level colleges in the number of students who study abroad on a quarterly or semester-long basis. It also has a community service requirement for graduation, and about 35 percent of all students work with faculty on a research project. Some UW-Eau Claire students begin their undergraduate work by earning an associate of arts at nearby Immanuel Lutheran College. This college also offers a bachelor's of science in education, bachelor's of arts in pre-theological studies and a bachelor's of arts in religious studies. Chippewa Valley Technical College enrolls about 8,000 and offers courses in a variety of career clusters, including health science and information technology. Eau Claire economyManufacturing, technology and health care are among the thriving sectors of the robust economy in Eau Claire, which has a population of about 65,000 and is located in northwestern Wisconsin, about 80 miles east of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Hutchinson Technology employs more than 1,000 people, and other local hi-tech companies include Silicon Logic Engineering and NanoRite Center. Major manufacturing outfits include Phillips Plastics Corporation and PDM Bridge.
