The waterfront city of Bellingham, Wash., is about an hour from Vancouver, B.C. and 90 minutes from Seattle. Its harbor views coupled with ample green space make this city a picturesque place to study and work. An emphasis on education must be important in Bellingham as some 37.4 percent of adults living there have a bachelor's degree or higher, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This compares with 31 percent for the entire state and 29.9 percent for the nation as a whole.

Bellingham Colleges and Universities

Bellingham's colleges and universities include Western Washington University, a school of more than 15,000 students, which offers some 160 academic programs. For Washington residents, a year at Western Washington University costs an estimated $20,000 a year, including housing, meals, books and supplies, transportation and other fees. The cost is about $30,000 a year for out-of-state undergrads. Alternative education programs such as lifelong learning, independent learning and a weekend MBA are also options through the school. Whatcom Community College is also in Bellingham. This two-year college provides educational options to more than 12,000 students a year with academics focused in nursing, hospitality, tourism and more. As a student in Bellingham, you'll find opportunities to pursue either an associate, bachelor's or advanced degree.

Bellingham economy

Bellingham is a city of approximately 80,000 residents. The biggest employers in town include Western Washington University and the local hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center. The median household income is $57,224 and the average commute time is 25 minutes.
