The school even offers programs that allow students to personalize courses through the help of a faculty member. With about 20,000 undergrads, tuition at George Mason is about $9,000 per year for in-state students and about $26,500 if you're out-of-state. Northern Virginia Community College's Loudoun Campus is also located in Sterling. About 11,000 students study each year on that 93-acre campus, which offers programs such as veterinary technology, music recording technology, and communication design. An education at Northern Virginia Community College costs about $138 per credit for in-state students and $332 per credit for out-of-state students.

The average commute time for Sterling residents is about half an hour, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and 80 percent of residents own their homes. The city is home to about 28,000 residents, but also has other interesting details: the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office is headquartered there and the city was once the former headquarters for AOL.
