This town of more than 24,000 people has a lot more to offer than that, including good colleges and a thriving economy. Salem collegesThe main college in Salem is Roanoke College. This liberal arts college of 2,100 full-time students is in the top nine percent of colleges by the Princeton Review for 2012. Roanoke College offers more than 70 undergraduate programs, including several pre-professional programs in subjects such as nursing and law, and has nearly 40 athletic teams. But be warned: it is a little pricey. Tuition is set at $32,000 a year. National College also has a campus in Salem. At this campus, students can choose from one master's degree program (business administration), four bachelor's degree programs, nine associate degrees (including medical assisting and paralegal), and 12 diplomas. Salem economyThe main industries in Salem are education and health care (with a combined 26.7 percent of the workforce). The top three employers in town are the Veterans Administration Medical Center (1,950 employees), Lewis-Gale Hospital HCA (1,419 employees), and Yokohama Industries (950 employees). The median household income in Salem is $48,828. Though the population has grown by less than a half percent from 2000 to 2010, Salem displays one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, at only 6.6 percent.
