This town of 35,670 people has come a long way in education and business since World War II when it declared itself the "sandbagging capital of the world." Weslaco collegesSouth Texas College's Mid-Valley campus is in Weslaco. There are more than 3,400 students at this campus. The community college as a whole offers more than 100 associate degrees and certificates and three bachelor's degrees, and is ranked the most affordable college in the country. STC also boasts a 95 percent Hispanic student population. There are also two vocational schools in Weslaco: South Texas Vocational Technical Institute and Valley Grande Institute. Both schools offer specialized health programs, with South Texas Vocational Technical Institute also offering a number of other programs including welding, computer accounting, and paralegal studies.
