Friendswood, Texas Colleges

Friendswood, Texas achieves the suburban dream: quiet, friendly neighborhoods to live in but big-city opportunity to be found nearby.

Friendswood, Texas Colleges and Universities

In 2007, Money Magazine ranked Friendswood, Texas as one of the best cities to live in and it's clear to see why. This town of about 35,000 people successfully showcases the suburban dream: quiet, friendly neighborhoods to live in but nearby access to big-city offerings -- in this case, Houston, less than half an hour away. Education is a priority in Friendswood, as 45 percent of adults have a bachelor's degree or higher, according to the U.S. Bureau. This compares favorably with the statewide average of 25.8 percent for the same group.

Friendswood, Texas schools and colleges

Students and residents in Friendswood will find a number of academic opportunities to help in the pursuit of their career ambitions. Texas School of Business provides such a choice. With a campus location in Friendswood, the school offers students the opportunity to work toward a diploma in dental assisting, medical assisting, or medical billing and coding. Students can also study for an Associate of Applied Science in criminal justice degree.

Located less than 10 miles away, in Houston, is the University of Houston-Clear Lake. A school of about 8,000 students, UHCL offers 40 bachelor's degrees, 45 master's degrees, and one doctoral program in subjects ranging from engineering to education. Because nearly 40 percent of the student body is African American, Asian American, Hispanic, or Native American, UHCL offers diversity to students wanting more than just an education. Tuition is about $6,000 a year for in-state residents and approximately $16,000 a year for out-of-state students.

Economic outlook for Friendswood

Friendswood has a dynamic economy for a town its size. The main industries are education and health care (comprising about a quarter of the workforce) and manufacturing (about 15 percent of the workforce). Some of the top employers in the area include Baybrook Mall, Friendswood Independent School District, and the City of Friendswood. The residents in the town have a median income that far surpasses that for the state as a whole: $99,780 compared to $49,646, according to 2006-2010 data from the U.S. Census Bureau. This means that the city could be the place for you to pursue your education, but also to seek that suburban dream.
