However, it is not a place that is mired in the past. Robust international trade has kept Brownsville growing and thriving, and graduates who begin their careers there could be well-positioned for the future. Brownsville collegesAlthough the University of Texas-Brownsville has a large student population of nearly 14,000, it is a recently-created school, having been established in 1991. It has quickly become one of the primary U.S. institutions of higher learning graduating Latinos. About 92 percent of the student body is Hispanic, according to the university's website, and the Excelencia in Education research group ranked it No. 8 in the country for associate degrees conferred to Latinos and No. 24 for bachelor's degrees. Astronomy, biomedicine, transnational studies, and educational development are a few of its signature programs. As listed on the UTB website, in-state undergraduate tuition is $2,997 and out-of-state is $7,692. This is well under the average for Texas public universities, which according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating board will have average tuition and fees of $7,360 (in-state) and $17,659 (out-of-state) for 2012-13. UTB currently combines aspects of a community college and a university due to its partnership with Texas Southmost College; however, TSC is seeking separate accreditation to become an independent institution. Brownsville careersHeavy and light manufacturing have long been mainstays of the Brownsville economy with key employers being Consulting Point, Keppel Amfels and Jamestown Plastics. Its location on the Gulf of Mexico also makes the city a transportation and logistics center with a world-class deep sea port. But Brownsville is also seeing tremendous growth in next-generation sectors like nanotechnology and renewable energy. There are plans for the nation's largest offshore wind farm to be constructed in the waters off Brownsville, and Photon8, a local research and development company, is making breakthroughs in biofuel production.
