Williamsport Colleges and UniversitiesAbout 1,400 students attend Lycoming College, which occupies a 40-acre Williamsport campus. The private liberal arts college is known for an especially rigorous writing component in its curriculum and for encouraging student research. Its most popular degree programs are in business, the social sciences and psychology. Williamsport is also home to a public college, the Pennsylvania College of Technology. This school offers certificates, associate and bachelor's degrees in a variety of highly employable subjects, including automobile mechanics, construction engineering technology and nursing. It has an undergraduate enrollment of about 6,300 and is located on a 997-acre campus. Average 2011-12 tuition and fees for a Pennsylvania two-year public college for in-state students were $3,663; for a four-year public college for in-state students, $12,079; and for a four-year private college for in-state students were $32,559, according to The College Board. EconomyGraduates of Williamsport colleges have plenty of reasons to stick around, as the city was named the seventh fastest growing U.S. metropolitan area in 2010 by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The local economy is booming in large measure because of the fast-growing natural gas industry, according to National Public Radio. This news source pointed out that Williamsport colleges are beginning to offer classes to train professionals for this industry. Other major local employers include ShopVac Corp. and West Pharmaceutical Services, as well as Brodart, a library service company, and Hope Enterprises, which provides services to the developmentally-disabled.
