Located just 10 miles outside of Pittsburgh, West Mifflin sits in Allegheny County, which is home to more than six Fortune 500 companies. West Mifflin Colleges and Your EducationThe Community College of Allegheny County has a campus in West Mifflin offering associate degrees as well as certificates and diplomas and that helps prepare students to transfer to a four-year school if that is their plan. According to the school website, some 95 percent of the community college's graduates live and work locally. West Mifflin is also home to the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics, which has degree programs in aviation and technology. But if you're looking for more choices, you don't have to go far: Pittsburgh has plenty of options for college including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, La Roche College, Duquesne University and Chatham University. The average tuition and fees for in-state students at public, two-year Pennsylvania colleges were $3,663 for the 2011-12 school year, according to The College Board. Tuition and fees averaged $12,079 for in-state students at four-year public colleges and $32,559 for those attending private four-year colleges in the state. West Mifflin Economy and Your FutureIf you're wondering what kind of career you might find after college in the West Mifflin area, it may interest you to know that the borough is located in Allegheny County, home to more than half-a-dozen Fortune 500 companies including General Nutrition Centers, Heinz, Mellon Bank, and PNC Corp. About 42 percent of the region's workforce are in the service sector and about 20 percent work in manufacturing. West Mifflin is a borough of about 20,000 residents where the median household income is about $44,000. There were about 1,200 businesses in town as of 2007, but if you don't find what you're looking for in West Mifflin itself, remember Allegheny County is always looking to attract businesses whether its the waterfront area they're developing or the headquarters for Dick's Sporting Goods located within the county.
