Washington, Pennsylvania Colleges

The City of Washington is home to many historic sites and one of the oldest co-ed, four-year liberal arts colleges: Washington and Jefferson College.

Located about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh, the city of Washington, Pa., is well-known for is location as the home to Washington and Jefferson College, a school established in 1781 and offering renowned pre-law and pre-health programs.

Washington and Jefferson College is one of the country's oldest co-ed, four-year liberal arts college. If you're already planning ahead to grad school, you may want to know that more than 90 percent of Washington and Jefferson College seniors are accepted to the law or health-related schools where they apply upon graduation. Also, more than 85 percent of the school's seniors either find work in their field or go to graduate school after finishing at Washington and Jefferson College.

If a four-year degree is not your bag, the Community College of Allegheny County also has a campus located in Washington, where students can take credit courses as well as professional development classes and can even find online work. There, you can pursue an education in business, education, health, the sciences and more. The average tuition and fees for in-state students attending public, two-year Pennsylvania colleges were $3,663 in the 2011-12 school year, according to The College Board. Tuition and fees came to $12,079 for in-state students at four-year public Pennsylvania colleges and $32,559 for those attending private four-year colleges in the state.

While there are about 1,300 businesses in the City of Washington, which takes up just over 3 square miles, Washington county, the home of this small city, has many more opportunities. In fact, according to the county's economic development website, the county offers low taxes and has a business-friendly atmosphere. Major employers in the county include Washington Hospital, CONSOL Energy, Inc., Meadows Racetrack and Casino, and Monongahela Valley Hospital.
