There are many other colleges near State College, which may explain why 66 percent of adult residents in town possess bachelor's degrees -- much higher than the state and nationwide averages. However, the total costs you pay per year will vary on the type of school you attend. According to The College Board, in-state tuition and fees in Pennsylvania for the 2011-12 were $3,663 for two-year public colleges, $12,079 for public four-year colleges, and $32,559 for private nonprofit four-year colleges. State College economyEducation and health care employ nearly half of the workforce in State College. Some of the top employers include Mount Nittany Medical Center, Pennsylvania State University (with some 23,000 employees), and Wal-Mart Associates, Inc. Within the last decade alone, the population of State College grew by nearly 10 percent.
