The Jackson campus is just of the school's 16 campuses, but while there students can gain true-to-life experience as well as find small classes and evening learning opportunities. Just a 30-minute drive from Jackson, in Portsmouth, is Shawnee State University. A school of nearly 5,000 students, Shawnee State University offers programs that range from the associate degree to master's level. For those really set on finding a job soon after college, the university boasts an 85 percent employment rate within six months of graduation; additionally, 90 percent of it pre-med students are accepted into medical school. Tuition and fees cost about $7,000 a year for in-state students and $12,000 for out-of-state students. There are many other colleges in the area, but it's always best to consider costs when making your plans. According to The College Board, the average in-state tuition and fees in Ohio for the 2011-12 academic year came to $3,608 for public two-year colleges, $8,904 for public four-year colleges, and $28,376 for private nonprofit four-year colleges. The top five employers in Jackson County -- the county Jackson is in -- are: Bellisio Foods (1,315 employees), General Mills (1,200 employees), Wal-Mart (400 employees), Jackson County Government (320 employees) and Merillat Industries (200 employees).
