Flint, Michigan CollegesFlint Colleges, Universities, and SchoolsDespite having approximately 125,000 residents, Flint, Michigan has produced an impressive number of local artists and musicians, many of whom incorporate political activism and commentary into their art. John Sinclair, Jake the Flake, MC Breed, Grand Funk Railroad, and Shawn Chittle are just a few who entertain students at the area colleges, many of whom find inspiration from the decidedly anti-mainstream angle that some of these artists engender. One reason why so many progressive musicians seem to come out of Flint Michigan is due to the interesting history that the city has enjoyed over the years. Factory shutdowns, industry busts, and strong union activity have helped create a culture of leftist leanings despite the fact that Flint, Michigan colleges are situated in the cradle of America's conservative "heartland." In 2006, the nonpartisan Bay Area Center for Voting Research cited Flint, Michigan as the 10th most liberal city in the US (beating out cities such as Seattle and New York).
Flint Education Programs in MichiganOf course, Flint colleges are not solely focused on political activism. In between classes, be sure to check out the Flint Jazz Festival, the Buick Open PGA Tour, and the Michigan Storytellers Festival.
