Wyoming Community Colleges (2-Yr Colleges)Wyoming Junior Colleges, Technical Schools, and InstitutesThe State of Wyoming administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Wyoming, sometimes called Wyoming junior colleges, or Wyoming technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Wyoming colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Wyoming. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Wyoming local community Authorizing legislation permitting the organization of public two-year colleges was passed by the legislature in 1945. Over the next 23 years, seven local communities voted to create a community college district. The legislature created the Wyoming community College Commission in 1961 and the Wyoming Postsecondary Education Coordinating Council in 1991.
