Vermont Public Two-Year Colleges
Junior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and Schools
The State of Vermont administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Vermont, sometimes called Vermont junior colleges, or Vermont technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Vermont colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Vermont. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the
Vermont local community
Comprehensive community college education is a relatively recent addition to the state, although the Vermont Technical College traces its origins to the Randolph Normal School Founded in 1866 to train public school teachers. It became the Vermont School of Agriculture in 1910, the Vermont
Agricultural and Technical Institute in 1957, and in 1961 became part of the Vermont State College System. It was renamed Vermont Technical College in 1962.
In 1968, a task force looking at higher education determined that a great need existed for additional postsecondary access. It was determined that building a one campus-based institution or expanding any existing college would not meet the varied needs of rural communities. In 1970, the
governor issued an executive order creating the Community College of Vermont, which today consists of a statewide network of 12 offices in various communities across the state. These offices deliver transfer, occupational and continuing education programs. In 1972, the Community College of
Vermont merged with the Vermont State College system, which includes three four-year colleges and the Vermont Technical College.

Colleges and universities in Vermont offer many advantages that are hard to duplicate elsewhere in the country. Division I skiing, for example, is quite popular at many Vermont campuses, but relatively uncommon in places like Arizona, Florida, or Texas. But even for those students who aren't interested in skiing, there are plenty of advantages that come with attending Vermont universities and colleges. |
