South Dakota Public Two-Year Colleges

The State of South Dakota administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in South Dakota, sometimes called South Dakota junior colleges, or South Dakota technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" South Dakota colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in South Dakota. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the

South Dakota is unique in the United States in that it is the only state with no state-supported public community colleges. The state does have four public technical institutes offering associate degrees. The institutes operate under the South Dakota State Board of Education. There are
also three federally supported tribal colleges.
