Community Colleges
Public Two Year College
One factor consideration in choosing a college for many students is the choice between a two-year and a four-year college. South Carolina Community Colleges (2-Yr Colleges)

South Carolina Junior Colleges, Technical Schools, and Institutes

The State of South Carolina administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in South Carolina, sometimes called South Carolina junior colleges, or South Carolina technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" South Carolina colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in South Carolina. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the South Carolina local community

The origins of the South Carolina Technical College system are in the 1961 legislation that created an Advisory Committee for Technical Training. Concerned about the migration of young people out of the state and a lack of state industry, the legislature sought to provide training for established industry and provide high school graduates with the postsecondary technical training they needed to gain employment as technicians. The first technical institution was opened in Greenville in 1962, and within four years, an additional nine facilities were providing training.

In 1971, the legislature directed the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education to conduct a joint study on a proposal to establish a community college system. The report led to the passage of legislation in 1972 that created the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive education which now coordinates 16 comprehensive two-year institutions.
