Oklahoma Public Two-Year CollegesJunior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and SchoolsThe State of Oklahoma administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Oklahoma, sometimes called Oklahoma junior colleges, or Oklahoma technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Oklahoma colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Oklahoma. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Oklahoma local community
The first postsecondary institutions in Oklahoma were created by the territorial legislature prior to statehood in 1907. The public district junior colleges which began to develop in the 1920s and '30s were created by local communities and operated by local school boards. For more than a decade, there were different efforts to create a state coordinating board for higher education, but it wasn't until 1941 that the people of Oklahoma approved a constitutional amendment to create the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education. Additional junior and community colleges were opened in the '60s and '70s. Fifteen community colleges are included in the system.
