North Dakota Public Two-Year CollegesJunior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and SchoolsThe State of North Dakota administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in North Dakota, sometimes called North Dakota junior colleges, or North Dakota technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" North Dakota colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in North Dakota. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the North Dakota local community
The North Dakota State College of Science, provided for in the State Constitution in 1889, was founded in 1903 and is one of the oldest two-year institutions in the country. The State Board of Higher Education was established in 1939 and functions as the constitutional governing body for the state's five public universities, three two-year branches and two two-year colleges. North Dakota also has four tribal colleges supported by the federal government.
