Nevada Public Two-Year CollegesJunior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and SchoolsThe State of Nevada administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Nevada, sometimes called Nevada junior colleges, or Nevada technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Nevada colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Nevada. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Nevada local community
Community colleges in Nevada were not developed until the late 1960s, with the establishment of Northern Nevada Community College (now named Great Basin College) in Elko. In 1971, the Board of Regents adopted a State Plan for Community Colleges in the State of Nevada that outlined a comprehensive mission for the two-year colleges. During the 1970s and 1980s, three other community colleges serving the Reno/Sparks, Las Vegas and Carson City regions were established and placed under the governance of the University of Nevada Board of Regents.
