Nebraska Public Two-Year CollegesJunior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and SchoolsThe State of Nebraska administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Nebraska, sometimes called Nebraska junior colleges, or Nebraska technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Nebraska colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Nebraska. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Nebraska local community
Community colleges in Nebraska evolved from a combination of a local junior college, state vocational/technical colleges and area vocational/technical schools. In 1971, the Nebraska Legislature pulled these varied postsecondary institutions into a single system of two-year colleges, and in 1975, established six community college areas, four of which have multiple campuses. In 1993, the legislature revised and expanded the colleges' original role and mission of occupational education and created comprehensive community colleges. In addition to the six community college areas, the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture is an associate degree-granting branch of the University of Nebraska. Nebraska also has two federally supported tribal colleges.
