Montana Community Colleges (2-Yr Colleges)

Montana Junior Colleges, Technical Schools, and Institutes

The State of Montana administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Montana, sometimes called Montana junior colleges, or Montana technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Montana colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Montana. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Montana local community

The oldest community college in Montana, Dawson Community College, was established in 1940. Montana has three public community colleges and seven two-year tribal colleges. The state also has five former vocational-technical centers that operate under the auspices of the two state universities
