Community Colleges
Public Two Year College
One factor consideration in choosing a college for many students is the choice between a two-year and a four-year college. Mississippi Community Colleges (2-Yr Colleges)

Mississippi Junior Colleges, Technical Schools, and Institutes

The State of Mississippi administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Mississippi, sometimes called Mississippi junior colleges, or Mississippi technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Mississippi colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Mississippi. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Mississippi local community

Junior colleges were first organized in Mississippi in 1922 with passage of legislation authorizing existing agricultural high schools to extend their curriculum to include college work. In 1928, a state commission was created and the new junior colleges began receiving state support. By 1950, junior college districts were organized and were providing services to 54 of the state's 82 counties.

Legislation passed in 1950 began a separation of the junior colleges from agricultural high schools. In 1964, the legislature created 15 geographic areas that assigned every county to a junior college district. Currently, 15 junior college districts operate 21 comprehensive campuses, seven postsecondary vo-tech centers and eight multi-purpose vo-tech centers that serve secondary students.
