Michigan Public Two-Year CollegesJunior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and SchoolsThe State of Michigan administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Michigan, sometimes called Michigan junior colleges, or Michigan technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Michigan colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Michigan. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Michigan local community
Michigan is a state with a long history of two-year public institutions. Grand Rapids College was organized in 1914 and began a movement that has grown today to 28 public community colleges with 38 campuses. There are also three independent colleges and one tribal college in the state. Eleven of the colleges were originally extensions of public K-12 districts. Between 1954 and 1968, 18 additional community college districts were organized.
