Kansas Public Two-Year CollegesJunior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and SchoolsThe State of Kansas administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Kansas, sometimes called Kansas junior colleges, or Kansas technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Kansas colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Kansas. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Kansas local community
The history of community colleges in Kansas has been integrally tied to a 25-year effort to restructure higher education governance. Traditionally, governance of postsecondary education in Kansas has been fragmented, with coordination responsibility for community colleges falling under the State Board of Education. The state has a large number of higher education institutions per capita, making access to an institution relatively easy for most residents. Kansas students now are served by 19 community colleges, four technical colleges and seven free-standing area vocational technical schools. In 1999, after years of wrangling, the legislature finally approved a major restructuring of the entire higher education system.
