Iowa Public Two-Year Colleges
Junior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and Schools
The State of Iowa administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Iowa, sometimes called Iowa junior colleges, or Iowa technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Iowa colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Iowa. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the
Iowa local community
The first junior college in Iowa was established in the Mason City schools in 1918. By 1930, at least 32 towns and cities had organized public junior colleges as an extension of the high schools. In 1949, the Iowa General Assembly approved initial state funding based on institutional
enrollment. With the Depression and WWII, many colleges closed. Following a 1962 statewide study, legislation enacted in 1965 formed 15 area education districts to serve as the basis for a statewide system of community colleges. Today, there are 17 public community colleges, many with
multiple campuses.
