Indiana Public Two-Year CollegesJunior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and SchoolsThe State of Indiana administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Indiana, sometimes called Indiana junior colleges, or Indiana technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Indiana colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Indiana. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Indiana local community
Historically, Indiana has not had community colleges. One- and two-year programs were delivered by a number of other institutions, including: a public junior college, a statewide multi-campus vocation/technical college, and the regional and main campuses of the state's five senior
universities. Vincennes University, a public junior college, was established as a private college in 1801, but began receiving state support in the 1960s. Until 1999, it served primarily as a residential two-year campus enrolling traditional-aged students in transfer programs. Indiana
Vocational Technical College, know as Ivy Tech, was established in 1963 as a statewide multi-campus system to deliver non-transfer-oriented vocational technical education courses and programs at the associate degree level at 22 sites across the state.
